Préparez votre mobilité étudiante : conseils de diplômées en Allemagne

Dans le cadre d’accompagnement à la mobilité internationale le Service Relations Alumni de l’Université de Strasbourg a organisé un webinaire consacré aux études, à l’intégration et aux perspectives professionnelles en Allemagne avec la participation de deux intervenantes ayant une expérience académique et professionnelle franco-allemande. Il a été facilité par la Direction des relations Internationales, dans le cadre de France Alumni Day. Ce temps d’échange avait pour objectif d’aider les étudiants envisageant une mobilité universitaire ou professionnelle en Allemagne à mieux anticiper leur départ, à comprendre les réalités du terrain et à bénéficier de retours d’expérience concrets.

Les avantages d’une mobilité
L’un des premiers constats partagés durant le webinaire concerne l’impact structurant d’une expérience de mobilité sur les trajectoires de vie. Les intervenantes ont souligné qu’un séjour d’études à l’étranger ne constitue pas uniquement une expérience académique, mais participe également au développement de compétences interculturelles essentielles dans le monde professionnel.
Au-delà de l’amélioration linguistique, une mobilité permet de développer des capacités d’adaptation, une meilleure compréhension des environnements multiculturels et une ouverture internationale valorisée sur le marché du travail. Plusieurs exemples ont montré comment une expérience Erasmus pouvait influencer durablement des choix académiques, professionnels ou personnels, jusqu’à orienter un projet d’installation à l’étranger.
Les intervenantes ont également rappelé qu’une mobilité peut conduire à redéfinir son projet professionnel, ouvrir de nouvelles opportunités de carrière ou favoriser des parcours transfrontaliers.
Différences culturelles
Le webinaire a mis en évidence plusieurs différences culturelles observées dans le cadre universitaire et professionnel allemand.
Parmi les éléments les plus fréquemment évoqués figurent la ponctualité, fortement valorisée en Allemagne, ainsi qu’un rapport au cadre de travail généralement plus structuré.
Dans les études comme en entreprise, les consignes et procédures sont souvent appliquées de manière rigoureuse, ce qui peut représenter un changement d’habitudes pour des étudiants français.
Les Alumni ont insisté sur l’importance de comprendre ces différences non comme des obstacles, mais comme des codes culturels à intégrer afin de mieux s’adapter au contexte local et d’éviter certaines incompréhensions, notamment dans les environnements professionnels.
La préparation avant le départ
Une large partie des échanges a porté sur la préparation du départ.
Les participantes ont souligné l’importance d’évaluer honnêtement son niveau de langue avant une mobilité, notamment dans des formations spécialisées ou techniques. Certaines universités allemandes proposent néanmoins des dispositifs d’accompagnement linguistique complémentaires, tels que des cours de soutien en grammaire ou en langue académique.
Les démarches administratives ont également été identifiées comme un défi majeur, notamment l’enregistrement obligatoire auprès des autorités locales (Anmeldung) ou certaines contributions spécifiques (redevance audiovisuelle et d’autres taxes à prévoir).
Concernant le budget, il a été rappelé que les coûts varient fortement selon les villes, avec un niveau de vie particulièrement élevé dans certaines métropoles comme Munich dans ces villes le coût de vie peut dépasser 1000€. Les intervenantes ont recommandé d’anticiper les frais de logement, de transport et les dépenses du quotidien, tout en mobilisant les dispositifs existants : bourses Erasmus+, aides régionales, bourses du CROUS ou job étudiant sur place.
Les échanges ont également mis en avant une possibilité moins connue : certaines institutions religieuses (protestantes, catholiques ou associatives) proposent des logements étudiants à prix réduit, parfois ouverts à tous, indépendamment de l’appartenance religieuse. Une intervenante a partagé son expérience personnelle dans un foyer protestant à Mayence (Wohnheim protestant), tandis qu’une autre a mentionné une résidence liée à une institution musulmane turque à Munich (mais qu’on trouve dans toutes les grandes villes d’Allemagne), qui lui a permis de réduire considérablement son budget logement.
Intégration
L’intégration sociale et culturelle a constitué un autre thème central du webinaire.
Les Alumni ont insisté sur l’importance d’oser commencer les discussions avec les étudiants locaux et de rester ouverte plutôt que de rester exclusivement dans un cercle francophone ou international.
Selon leurs témoignages, une immersion plus active favorise non seulement l’apprentissage linguistique plus rapide, mais permet aussi de développer des relations personnelles et professionnelles durables.
Plusieurs dispositifs favorisant l’intégration ont été mentionnés : programmes de tandem linguistique, tutorat universitaire, groupes Erasmus, associations étudiantes et des groupes WhatsApp et Facebook.

Perspectives professionnelles et marché du travail franco-allemand
Les échanges ont enfin porté sur les débouchés professionnels dans les contextes transfrontaliers et franco-allemands.
Les participantes ont évoqué les opportunités dans des domaines variés tels que la gestion de projet, les affaires internationales, le secteur pharmaceutique ou encore les projets européens. Elles ont toutefois souligné que certains secteurs fonctionnent largement par projets, impliquant des contrats parfois temporaires au début du parcours professionnel.
L’importance du réseau professionnel, des contacts établis durant la mobilité et d’une stratégie active sur les plateformes professionnelles a également été mise en avant comme facteur clé d’insertion.
Enfin, ce webinaire a permis aux étudiants d’obtenir des retours d’expérience concrets sur les réalités d’une mobilité en Allemagne, avoir des conseils et les recommandations.
L’échange a également rappelé le rôle essentiel du réseautage et de garder les liens ce qui est justement le rôle du Réseau Alumni !

Preparing for Your Student Mobility: Alumni Advice on Studying in Germany
As part of its support for international mobility, the Alumni Relations Service of the University of Strasbourg organized a webinar dedicated to studying, integrating, and exploring career opportunities in Germany. The event featured two speakers with academic and professional experience in both France and Germany.
The webinar was facilitated by the International Relations Department as part of France Alumni Day.
The goal of this discussion was to help students considering an academic or professional mobility experience in Germany better prepare for their departure, understand local realities, and benefit from practical first-hand experiences.

Audrey Leclerc worked as a KTUR Project Manager at the University of Strasbourg, where she coordinated a EuroAupean project aimed at strengthening cooperation between universities, research centers, and businesses in the Upper Rhine region. Committed to European and international affairs, she also serves as a representative of French citizens living abroad in Southern Germany.
Her professional background includes experience in European project communication, economic research at Natixis, as well as positions at the European Parliament and the Île-de-France Regional Council.

Zeynep Furtana is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Project Management after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Foreign Languages (English-German). During her third year, she participated in the Erasmus programme in Munich, an experience that enabled her to strengthen both her linguistic and intercultural skills.
Today, she is completing an internship in Germany at Komtur as a Clinical Trials Project Management Intern.

The benefits of an international mobility experience
One of the key points highlighted during the webinar was the transformative impact that an international mobility experience can have on personal and professional development. The speakers emphasized that studying abroad is not merely an academic opportunity. It also contributes significantly to the development of intercultural skills that are increasingly valued in today’s professional world.
Beyond improving language proficiency, mobility experiences help students develop adaptability, gain a deeper understanding of multicultural environments, and acquire an international outlook that is highly appreciated by employers. Several examples illustrated how an Erasmus experience can have a lasting influence on academic, professional, and personal choices, sometimes even leading participants to consider building their future abroad.
The speakers also pointed out that a mobility experience can encourage students to redefine their career plans, discover new professional opportunities, or pursue cross-border career paths.
Cultural differences
The webinar highlighted several cultural differences observed in both German universities and workplaces.
Among the aspects most frequently mentioned were punctuality, which is highly valued in Germany, and a generally more structured approach to work and study. In both academic and professional settings, rules and procedures are often followed rigorously, which may require some adjustment for French students.
The alumni stressed that these differences should not be viewed as obstacles but rather as cultural codes to understand and embrace in order to adapt successfully to the local environment and avoid misunderstandings, particularly in professional contexts.
Preparation before departure
A significant part of the discussion focused on preparation before departure.
The speakers emphasized the importance of honestly assessing one’s language level before undertaking a mobility experience, especially in specialized or technical programmes. However, many German universities offer additional language support, including grammar courses and academic language assistance.
Administrative procedures were also identified as a major challenge, particularly mandatory registration with local authorities (Anmeldung), as well as certain compulsory fees and taxes, such as the broadcasting contribution.
Regarding finances, participants were reminded that living costs vary considerably depending on the city, with particularly high expenses in major urban areas such as Munich, where monthly living costs can exceed €1,000. The speakers recommended planning ahead for accommodation, transportation, and everyday expenses while making full use of available financial support schemes, including Erasmus+ grants, regional funding, CROUS scholarships, and student jobs.
The discussion also highlighted a lesser-known housing option: some religious institutions (Protestant, Catholic, or community-based organizations) offer affordable student accommodation, often open to students regardless of their religious affiliation. One speaker shared her personal experience living in a Protestant student residence in Mainz (Protestant Wohnheim), while another mentioned accommodation provided by a Turkish Muslim organization in Munich (similar residences can be found in many major German cities) which significantly reduced her housing expenses.
Integration
Social and cultural integration was another central topic of the webinar.
The alumni emphasized the importance of taking the initiative to engage with local students and remaining open to new interactions rather than staying exclusively within French-speaking or international circles.
According to their experiences, active immersion not only accelerates language learning but also helps build lasting personal and professional relationships.
Several resources and initiatives that facilitate integration were mentioned, including language tandem programmes, university mentoring schemes, Erasmus groups, student associations, and WhatsApp and Facebook communities.

The discussion concluded with an overview of career opportunities within cross-border and Franco-German contexts.
The speakers highlighted opportunities in various fields, including project management, international affairs, the pharmaceutical industry, and European projects. However, they also noted that some sectors operate largely on a project basis, which may involve temporary contracts at the beginning of a professional career.
The importance of professional networking, maintaining contacts established during the mobility experience, and actively using professional networking platforms was also emphasized as a key factor for successful career integration.
Overall, this webinar provided students with valuable first-hand insights into the realities of studying and working in Germany, as well as practical advice and recommendations for preparing their mobility experience.
The discussion also served as a reminder of the essential role of networking and maintaining professional connections, one of the core missions of the Alumni Network.
